Georgetown will spray against mosquitoes after trap tests positive for West Nile virus

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — After another mosquito trap tested positive for West Nile virus, the city of Georgetown will spray for mosquitoes Sunday and Monday evenings, the city and county health district said Tuesday.

According to the city and the Williamson County and Cities Health District, the trap sample was collected on Sept. 27 at a location on the Yellow Rose Trail in Sun City.

Accordingly 2023 season data from WCCHDThere have been 25 West Nile virus-positive collections in the county this year.

The city will use mosquito sprayers in Sun City on Oct. 8 and 9. The city and WCCHD said spraying does not pose a significant health risk, but people and pets should stay indoors while spraying occurs if possible.

In August, WCCHD reported its first human case of West Nile virus this year. A woman in northern Williamson County has been diagnosed with the disease.

Last week, Austin Public Health reported the first death from the virus in 2023.

How to prevent West Nile virus

There are some ways to prevent the virus. Here are recommendations from the WCCHD:

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or another EPA-approved repellent when outdoors
  • Wear long, loose, light-colored clothing when outdoors
  • Drain or treat standing water where mosquitoes might lay eggs.
